Who are NEST Liaisons?
These teachers are the school site leaders for environmental education. They receive information about environmental resources and are invited to conferences/workshops. They share environmental education resources and opportunities with other teachers at the school site. There can be one or two liaisons per school site.
What is NEST?
The Network for Environmental Science Teaching (NEST) brings the adventure of learning through environmental education to educators K-12. In innovative ways, NEST helps educators connect environmental awareness, knowledge and critical thinking skills with excellence in science, math, language arts, reading, and social studies. Students explore and understand their world, work together for creative problem solving to protect the environment, and develop the citizenship skills that will serve them and their communities all their lives.
NEST programs have resulted in many unique instructional opportunities for students.
* Excelling in math, language arts, social studies, and science by using the environment as a basis for learning
* Planning and developing outdoor habitats, such as bird and butterfly gardens
* Adopting an endangered species and learning about and improving its habitat
* Designing school and home recycling and water conservation programs
* Using outdoor activities to enhance the understanding of children's literature
* Developing and applying critical thinking skills which lead to understanding local environmental problems
